Judge demands immigrants at Adelanto get clean water and medical care

politics

A federal judge has ordered sweeping changes at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in San Bernardino County, granting a preliminary injunction that requires officials to provide detainees with clean drinking water, adequate medical care, daily facility cleaning, and at least four hours of outdoor recreation, CalMatters reports. Judge Sunshine Suzanne Sykes found the detainees who sued are likely to prevail on claims that conditions at the facility violate Fifth Amendment protections against inhumane confinement. The lawsuit followed two deaths at Adelanto within weeks of each other last fall, both still under federal investigation. The government has fourteen days to produce a plan for medical care and disability accommodations, and two independent monitors will oversee compliance for the duration of the case.
