China just erased America's AI lead

Per Axios, China's Moonshot AI just released Kimi K3, an advanced language model that matches or exceeds leading American systems — including Anthropic's Fable 5 and Opus 4.8 — on benchmark tests. Kimi costs forty percent less than those U.S. competitors and will be released as an open-weight model on July twenty-seventh, allowing companies and governments to run it on their own hardware. This is striking because U.S. analysts estimated only months ago that China remained six to twelve months behind the American frontier. Even if the United States pulls ahead on future models, the convergence is real: the world now has access to frontier-class AI that's cheaper, customizable, and independent of American licensing — a fundamental shift in how advanced AI gets deployed globally.
