The parasitic illness causes severe watery diarrhea and has surged dramatically in recent weeks, with Michigan particularly hard hit—the state reported nearly one thousand cases, roughly twenty times its annual total. Ohio has also seen over one hundred seventy-five cases. While the infection is rarely life-threatening, health officials are still working to identify the outbreak's source.
