Why the Hillsborough Law has finally been passed, 37 years on
politics
The Conversation is reporting that the Hillsborough Law has finally passed through the UK's House of Commons, thirty-seven years after the tragedy that inspired it. In nineteen eighty-nine, a crowd crush at an FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield killed ninety-five people, and South Yorkshire Police went on to blame the fans and alter witness statements, accusations later definitively disproven. The new law, which passed unanimously on July fourteenth, places an active duty of candour on public officials during investigations into disasters and guarantees affected communities funding for legal representation. After negotiations with families of the Manchester Arena bombing victims, it will apply with no exceptions, including for the security services.
