Lighthouse-Keepers’ Houses at Hynish in Hynish, Scotland

On Scotland's southwest coast stands the restored Hynish Signal Tower, a portal to maritime history. Built in the eighteen thirties and forties to support Skerryvore Lighthouse—the nation's tallest—the tower served as an operational hub where workers coordinated supply shipments to an isolated reef. Before radio existed, the signal tower's operator watched the horizon through a telescope, communicating with offshore keepers by semaphore signals and raising a ball on a flagstaff. According to Atlas Obscura, one charming tradition emerged: when lighthouse keepers stationed offshore had sons, a pair of trousers was hoisted to announce the birth; daughters were celebrated with a dress. The tower's cottages, built in Egyptian Revival style, now house the Skerryvore Museum—one of Scotland's better-preserved examples of a lighthouse-keepers' village.
