Lui Seng Chun in Hong Kong
other
Lui Seng Chun, a striking blend of Art Deco and Chinese architecture completed in nineteen thirty-one, stands as a rare survivor of Hong Kong's pre-war heritage, Atlas Obscura reports. Originally built for a co-founder of the Kowloon Motor Bus company, it housed a traditional Chinese medicine clinic on the ground floor and the Lui family's residence above. After the owner's death in nineteen forty-four, the building gradually emptied and sat derelict for nearly three decades. In a Hong Kong first, the Lui family donated their ancestral home to the government in two thousand and three, enabling Hong Kong Baptist University to restore it as a Chinese medicine facility; the building reopened in April two thousand and twelve, completing a full circle.
