The Big Galah in Kimba, Australia

other

In the Australian town of Kimba, a giant pink and grey cockatoo has been welcoming travelers for more than three decades. The Big Galah, as it's known, stands eight metres tall and weighs two point three tonnes. Per Atlas Obscura, the sculpture was built by the Venning family over eighteen months, completed in nineteen ninety-three. It received a fresh coat of pink paint in twenty twenty-one to restore its eye-catching appearance. The galah—a common Australian cockatoo—is one of many iconic 'Big Things' scattered across the country that help small rural towns gain recognition. Kimba itself is notable for sitting at what's considered the geographic midpoint between Perth and Sydney.
