‘It’s only going to get worse’: wildfires forcing firefighters to make impossible choices

The Guardian reports that as the climate crisis fuels more intense wildfires and pushes them into new parts of the world, the firefighters battling them are increasingly forced to ration resources and choose which blazes to fight. It follows César Alcaraz, who became a firefighter in Spain in the late 1990s and once had to flee a fast-moving inferno in the Montgó mountain region when his truck ran out of water. Nearly three decades later, now an officer with Alicante's provincial firefighters, he compares the commanders' agonizing decisions to those of a doctor in an emergency room with too few ventilators. As one firefighter puts it, the season is only going to get worse.
