Drill music, the aggressive hip-hop subgenre known for fast-paced beats and often violent lyrics, has exploded across Addis Ababa. According to France 24, the genre was confined to social media in Ethiopia last year, but over the last few months it's taken over mainstream bars and nightclubs in the capital. Some point to Gen Z's lack of political and economic certainty as a driver of its rapid rise. However, Ethiopia remains deeply conservative, and Drill has sparked resistance—not everyone is a fan of the aggressive sound.
