Insurance companies require pre-approval—called prior authorization—for many treatments your doctor recommends. The process often delays care and frustrates patients and physicians alike. Ars Technica reports that artificial intelligence could theoretically speed up decisions on straightforward cases. But a twenty twenty-five American Medical Association survey found that sixty-one percent of doctors worry AI tools will increase wrongful denials of necessary treatments. As health systems consider automating prior authorization, physicians remain skeptical that speed will come without a cost to patients.
