Per ScienceDaily, the Mediterranean diet may slow aging by boosting tiny proteins produced inside our cells' mitochondria. Older adults who most closely followed this diet showed higher levels of humanin and SHMOOSE — proteins linked to protecting the heart and brain. Olive oil, fish, legumes, and cutting back on refined carbohydrates appeared especially beneficial. The research could eventually help scientists develop more personalized nutrition plans for healthy aging.
