Germany’s CDU party chair resigns after using surrogacy to become parent

politics

A senior German politician has resigned as chair of his party after using a surrogate mother to become a parent. Jens Spahn, a key ally of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, previously criticized what he called 'rented wombs,' and his party remains strongly opposed to surrogacy — which is illegal in Germany. As health minister in 2020, Spahn refused to relax the country's surrogacy ban. Yet he and his husband, Daniel Funke, pursued surrogacy in the United States to become parents. Per The Guardian, the revelation has prompted Spahn's resignation from leading the Christian Democratic Union.
