São Tomé and Príncipe heads to polls in tense presidential election

The Guardian reports that voters in São Tomé and Príncipe, one of Africa's least populous nations, head to the polls Sunday for a presidential election. The incumbent, Carlos Vila Nova, is running as an independent, seeking a second term despite breaking with his former party. According to the National Election Commission, about one hundred forty-two thousand people are registered to vote, with approximately fifteen percent of that electorate living abroad.
