In 1945, Five bombers vanished and launched the Bermuda Triangle legend

Boing Boing revisits the flight that gave the Bermuda Triangle its legend. On December fifth, nineteen forty-five, five Navy torpedo bombers took off from Fort Lauderdale on a routine navigation exercise and never came back. As Boing Boing tells it, the flight leader, Lieutenant Charles Taylor, radioed that both of his compasses had failed, saying he was sure he was over the Keys but didn't know how far down he was or how to get back to Fort Lauderdale. The disappearance of those five planes became the origin story for decades of Bermuda Triangle lore.
