New trial of AI-powered traffic lights will be a test for who gets priority on public roads

Australia's first AI-powered traffic light is coming to Brisbane. Per The Conversation, the City of Moreton Bay will trial the system later this year at an intersection in Petrie, using real-time sensor data to watch the road and adjust timing instead of following fixed schedules. In Pittsburgh, a similar system cut travel time by twenty-five percent, reduced waiting by forty percent, and lowered emissions by more than twenty percent. But here's the harder question: who gets priority when the light decides? Should a bus full of children cross first, or cars waiting alone? Should a schoolchild have more time to cross, or a cyclist? These aren't just traffic questions—they shape whether the city stays car-dependent or shifts toward buses and bikes. The Conversation also warns of cybersecurity risks: connected lights can be hacked to cause traffic jams or unsafe signal timing. Cities deploying these systems should decide their values first, explain the choices to the public, and keep humans in control when systems fail.
