Top Pentagon official takes shot at OpenAI's Dean Ball

Per Axios, a senior Pentagon official is publicly challenging OpenAI's Dean Ball over his views on regulating Chinese artificial intelligence. Ball, who formerly helped architect the Trump administration's A-I Action Plan, now leads strategic futures at OpenAI and recently suggested the government use regulation to deter Chinese A-I models. But that prompted White House adviser David Sacks to question whether Ball was advocating for regulatory capture that would primarily benefit his new employer. The Pentagon's under secretary of defense was even more pointed, questioning Ball's judgment publicly on social media. The clash echoes an earlier Pentagon dispute with Anthropic that spiraled into a national security standoff, raising questions about whether OpenAI's government relationship could be heading in the same direction.
