Taxpayers could pay millions to abuse survivors if Christian Brothers goes bankrupt, court documents reveal

Australian taxpayers may end up covering as much as sixty-five million dollars in compensation to hundreds of child abuse survivors, according to new court documents reported by The Guardian (World). The Christian Brothers, a Catholic religious order with a long record of child abuse, told a court last month that it was going broke and could not afford to pay the survivors owed redress. That leaves the national redress scheme, which is backed by government funding when an institution cannot pay, as the likely fallback for claims that could number in the hundreds.
