NASA, GE Aerospace Work Enables Hybrid-Electric Flight Demonstration

NASA and GE Aerospace have successfully demonstrated a hybrid-electric engine designed for regional aircraft. The system flew publicly for the first time at the Farnborough International Air Show, breaking records: it became the first hybrid-electric aircraft to exceed thirty thousand feet and completed the longest such flight on record, over two hours. Per NASA, the engine combines electric motors, a gas turbine, and energy storage to reduce fuel burn and operating costs. The achievement represents the culmination of more than fifteen years of development, overcoming engineering challenges that once made hybrid aviation seem nearly impossible.
