Echolocation for Drones

Per Hackaday, researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute have developed low-power ultrasonic sensors for drones that work without GPS or computer vision. The system combines a dual sonar array with a sound shield and a neural network to filter echoes and identify obstacles. It performs well in fog, smoke, and dense forest—conditions that defeat traditional navigation—and the team tested it in both simulated and real environments. They've released all the code and hardware as open source.
