Swimming can alleviate low back pain – new study

health

The Conversation reports on a study showing that swimming genuinely helps with chronic low back pain. Researchers studied 76 adults with persistent back pain, assigning them to either an eight-week swimming program or education alone. The swimmers—doing three weekly sessions of thirty to forty-five minutes with physiotherapy support—saw their disability drop by more than half, improvements nearly thirty percent greater than the education-only group. Twelve months later, the benefits remained, though the gap between groups narrowed. The study was relatively small, but the evidence suggests swimming offers a genuine, low-impact path for people with chronic back pain to rebuild activity and confidence.
