Burnham to review early prisoner release scheme amid anger over potential freeing of PC Harper’s killers – UK politics live

politics

The Guardian reports that new Prime Minister Andy Burnham will review the early release scheme for prisoners, after anger over the possible freeing of those convicted in the killing of PC Andrew Harper. Burnham said on Wednesday that the main perpetrator in that case will now not be subject to early release, and that he will look at the whole policy. Elsewhere in the same briefing, Wes Streeting said President Trump was right to press Europe to pay more toward its own defence, noting the UK has committed two hundred ninety-eight billion pounds over the next four years, including an additional fifteen billion pounds on top of last year's spending review settlement. Streeting added that NATO members reaffirmed a commitment of three point five percent of GDP by twenty thirty-five at the alliance's recent summit, while Trump has pushed allies toward five percent.
