AI companies are buying up old books to escape their own AI slop

AI companies are facing a data problem of their own creation, per Boing Boing. The open web is now filled with AI-generated text, and training new models on that material risks model collapse—a degradation where machines deteriorate by consuming their own output. To access authentic human-written content, at least one company has begun bulk-purchasing old printed books.
