Charles Gaines, the author whose nineteen seventy-four book Pumping Iron helped push professional bodybuilding into the mainstream, has died at eighty-four. The Guardian reports that Gaines died Tuesday, according to his daughter, the musician and writer Greta Gaines, who did not disclose a cause. The book led to the making of a documentary of the same name, which introduced a young Arnold Schwarzenegger to a worldwide audience and became a defining record of the sport's rise.
