Copilot vs. raw API access: What are you actually paying for?
dev_tools
According to GitHub's blog, developers keep asking: 'Why pay for Copilot when I can call the same models through an API?' The answer is integration. Copilot connects the language model to the editor, repository, issues, pull requests, terminal, and organization policies — it's a complete development workflow from issue to merged code. Raw API access gives you full control for building custom systems, but you own all the engineering: prompts, routing, retries, logs, security, billing. GitHub tested Copilot on five benchmarks and found it achieved parity in task completion while using fewer tokens in most cases. The service now supports Bring Your Own Key, so teams with existing provider contracts can use their preferred model while keeping GitHub's integration.
