Is On-Prem Making A Comeback?

tech

Crunchbase News reports that companies are increasingly asking for on-prem systems again, reversing a decade of cloud-first thinking. Three trends are driving this shift. First, artificial intelligence is making attacks more sophisticated—voice cloning and AI-powered phishing are now harder to distinguish from legitimate requests, pushing companies to seek tighter control over sensitive systems like payments and identity management. Second, as enterprise AI moves from pilot to production, organizations are reluctant to store proprietary data—contracts, source code, financial records—on cloud platforms where costs scale with every query. Keeping data closer to home becomes both more secure and cheaper at scale. Third, even though quantum computing isn't yet commercial, serious companies are already rethinking long-term encryption strategies, worried that future quantum computers could render today's encryption obsolete, making cloud-stored data feel vulnerable. While on-prem infrastructure doesn't guarantee security, it offers companies clearer ownership and control over systems they can't afford to compromise.
