Mayor shot dead in Mexico months after surviving assassination attempt

The Guardian reports that a mayor in the Mexican state of Morelos has been shot dead, months after surviving an earlier attempt on his life. Valentín Lavín Romero, a member of the Green party allied with the ruling leftwing Morena party, was killed on Wednesday. He had been wounded at the end of January when gunmen opened fire on him at a motorway petrol station. According to The Guardian, he is the fourteenth mayor to be murdered since Claudia Sheinbaum became Mexico's president in October twenty twenty-four.
