California sues Trump over emergency funding rules that pressure states on elections

politics

California and twenty-four other Democratic-led states are suing the Trump administration over emergency preparedness funding. CalMatters reports the administration is conditioning billions of dollars in disaster relief—California alone receives one hundred fifty million dollars annually—on whether states adopt new election administration rules: a federal system to verify voter citizenship, hand-marked paper ballots, and post-election audits. States that decline could lose at least twenty percent of this critical funding. This is the third lawsuit over the same issue; federal courts have already rejected this tactic twice.
