Guyanese authorities confirm death of 72 people in sinking of coastal ferry

The confirmed death toll from a state ferry that capsized off Guyana's coast has risen to seventy-two, The Guardian reports. Of the roughly one hundred seventy-nine people believed to have been aboard, seventy-six were rescued, while a multinational team continues struggling to salvage the partially submerged vessel and recover more bodies. Guyana's government has estimated that as many as one hundred may have died, which would make it the worst marine tragedy on record for the South American nation.
