Low-Level Cloud Loss Amplifies Global Warming

According to Caltech News, researchers at Caltech and Google have identified a critical feedback loop in Earth's climate system. Low-level clouds over the oceans—uniform layers covering vast portions of subtropical seas—normally reflect sunlight and keep the planet cool. But as sea surface temperatures rise, these clouds thin out, reflecting less sunlight back to space and allowing more warmth to penetrate. A new study published this week in Science Advances shows that low clouds respond not only to temperature increases but also directly to rising carbon dioxide levels. As CO2 concentrations climb, the cloud-thinning effect accelerates—a pattern most current climate models underestimate. Using over seven thousand high-resolution simulations powered by Google's computing infrastructure, the team found that Earth's climate is likely more sensitive to carbon dioxide than existing models predict. The researchers can now confidently rule out the idea that this feedback loop dampens global warming. Instead, it amplifies it.
