More than 180,000 people flee or lock down as wildfires sweep France and Spain

More than one hundred eighty thousand people have fled or been ordered to shelter in place as huge wildfires swept across Spain and France on Friday, The Guardian reports. Authorities in south-west France ordered the total evacuation, by land and sea, of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a well-known holiday spot on the Atlantic coast, in the face of what officials called an intense and highly unpredictable blaze that has burned through more than nineteen thousand hectares of forest. Spain, meanwhile, has declared a national emergency as the fires spread.
