The family of a missing Rohingya footballer fears he is among some five hundred refugees believed dead in a series of shipwrecks off Myanmar. The Guardian reports that twenty-four-year-old Siraz Ullah boarded a boat bound for Malaysia in late June, hoping to escape the violence and persecution around him, after sending his relatives a final voice message asking for their prayers. He is now among the roughly five hundred Rohingya who vanished at sea. The Rohingya are a persecuted Muslim minority in Myanmar, many of whom have long fled by sea in search of safety.
