As temperatures soared and air conditioning demand peaked, two projects—Vineyard Wind off Massachusetts and Revolution Wind near Rhode Island—consistently delivered hundreds of megawatts to the grid. That windfall kept power companies from relying as heavily on expensive, pollution-heavy oil-burning plants. On July second, New England's hottest day, oil supplied just under ten percent of peak electricity demand, down from nearly fifteen percent during last year's June heat wave. That represented more than a gigawatt of oil-fueled power the grid didn't need to turn on. Analysts say the drop means real savings for residents already facing sticker shock on power bills. These projects prove offshore wind is essential year-round infrastructure, not just a winter reliability fix.
