The best way to save giant sequoias may be more fire

ScienceDaily reports that saving giant sequoias from catastrophic wildfires might require a counterintuitive approach: controlled burns. A study of twenty-six thousand four hundred trees found that those in prescribed-burn areas were nearly four times more likely to survive recent extreme wildfires. Researchers estimate the controlled fires prevented about nineteen hundred deaths—and could have saved thousands more if used across every grove.
