Repairing a “for parts” Canon 7D Mark II DSLR

Per Hackaday, a determined tinkerer named Dieter Vansteenwegen turned the tables on a broken Canon 7D Mark II DSLR he bought for one hundred eighty euros on eBay. The camera's display was unresponsive, HDMI dead, autofocus failing—but it could still take pictures when the shutter was fully pressed. Using custom Canon firmware tools and reference guides, Vansteenwegen traced the problem to the camera's main processor: the autofocus signal was floating at an active state, likely damaged by an unprotected external trigger module. The fix required just one thing—a bodge wire creating an external three point three volt pull-up to restore proper signal handling. The camera sprang back to life. While parts cost almost nothing, the repair demanded serious expertise and test equipment.
