Pedro Sánchez says Spain is suffering effects of climate crisis as firefighters battle wildfires in France

Firefighters in south-western France are struggling to stop a massive wildfire from reaching Bordeaux, with windy conditions on Saturday night undoing containment efforts, the Guardian reports. The blaze in the Gironde region has burned an area four times the size of Paris and forced nearly two hundred twenty thousand people to evacuate, and another heatwave is forecast to worsen the crisis. Meanwhile, according to the Guardian, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez said fires near Madrid are coming under control but that Spain and the wider Iberian peninsula are suffering the effects of the climate emergency. Another heatwave bearing down on the region threatens to complicate firefighting efforts further.
