When Pradhan stepped down on Saturday, what had been a tense standoff transformed into a celebration. The demonstrations are part of a broader movement called the Cockroach protests, which have swept through India this summer and notably shaken Prime Minister Narendra Modi's grip on power. They've proven that a younger generation is willing to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which has governed for twelve years — and they've done it, in part, through humor.
