French firefighters battle the blaze with local residents through the night

Wildfire crews in France faced one of the hardest parts of the fight after dark, when Canadair water-bomber planes are grounded by poor visibility. France 24 reports that through the night, firefighters worked the blaze on the ground, joined at times by local residents who pitched in with whatever limited equipment they had on hand. With aircraft unable to fly until daylight, ground crews remained the only line of defense against the flames.
