Pinochet-era soldier jailed for killing folk singer 53 years ago

Justice has finally caught up in one of Chile's most haunting Pinochet-era cases. Nelson Haase Mazzei, a retired army colonel, was sentenced in absentia back in 2023 for the murder of folk singer Víctor Jara, but fled before he could be jailed. The Guardian reports he's now been tracked down and brought into custody, more than fifty years after Jara's killing during the 1973 coup. He was the last of seven former soldiers convicted in the case still evading authorities.
