Viktor Yanukovych fled Ukraine in disgrace in 2014. A new investigation says he now lives in Sochi — under his mother’s maiden name.

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled Ukraine in early 2014, is now living in Sochi under an assumed identity, per an investigation covered by Meduza. The Ukrainian YouTube channel Telebachennya Toronto says Yanukovych is using documents in the name 'Oleg Nikolayevich Leonov'—his mother's maiden name—and lives at a compound called Blagodat with his longtime partner. Telebachennya Toronto also found that his son lives in Russia under a different surname, with the family's extensive real estate and bank holdings registered largely in the names of other family members. A Ukrainian court has convicted him in absentia on charges including treason, but he remains beyond the reach of Ukrainian law in Russia.
