Thune's shield against Trump

Senate Majority Leader John Thune is pushing back against President Trump over the SAVE America Act—and his GOP colleagues are backing him up. On Monday, Trump demanded via Truth Social that Thune pass the legislation or eliminate the filibuster, or not let the Senate leave town. Per Axios, Thune countered that the math simply isn't there: not enough votes for SAVE, not enough support to kill the filibuster, and no justification for canceling August recess. Multiple GOP senators publicly defended Thune's position, with one telling Axios his credibility in the conference has never been stronger. Seven conservative senators are pushing to delay the August break to pursue the bill, but even they acknowledge Thune's leadership isn't at risk.
