Play is essential for young children, including when it comes to their learning

Play-based early childhood programs deliver concrete learning advantages, the Conversation reports. Children who attended play-focused preschools scored higher on vocabulary and grammar measures compared to those in traditional programs, and they also developed stronger emotional regulation and problem-solving skills that carried into elementary school. Different play styles build different competencies: dramatic or pretend play helps children manage emotions and develop language, while constructive play with blocks supports cognitive development and mathematical understanding. Research shows that block play in early childhood even predicts higher math achievement in middle and high school. While child-directed play is most powerful, guided play—where adults ask open-ended questions and help work through conflicts—can enhance the benefits and may be more effective for math learning than direct instruction.
