First Thing: Pentagon accused of disrespecting war dead as Trump threatens to resume Iran war

The Pentagon has split its Iran war casualty count into two categories, adding a new label, "Overseas Operations," for troops killed or wounded starting July seventh, The Guardian reports. Retired rear admiral Michael E. Smith, who served combat tours in Iraq, Bosnia and Kosovo, called the reclassification a disrespect to the families of the dead. The administration justifies the split by arguing an April ceasefire paused the clock on the War Powers Act, which requires ending military operations within sixty days absent congressional authorization. Congress has not granted that authorization, leaving the conflict's legal status in dispute.
