A strong earthquake shakes part of southern Japan but no tsunami detected

A strong earthquake struck Kumamoto on Japan's southern island of Kyushu late Tuesday afternoon, causing damage and injuries. NPR News reports no tsunami was detected. Kumamoto has a history of destructive quakes, including a deadly 2016 sequence that reshaped the region's building codes.
