Deployed by both Russian and Ukrainian forces, these cables have tangled across forests and fields, creating hazards for wildlife and a lasting environmental problem. Researchers estimate more than thirteen thousand metric tons of fiber-optic waste has accumulated in combat zones since twenty twenty-four. The cables are made from durable polymers that could persist for decades, but only if removed before fragmenting—after which cleanup becomes virtually impossible, leaving a chemical legacy long after the conflict ends.
