Florida’s proposed property tax amendment will require trade-offs – and some residents could end up with higher costs

Florida voters face a property tax trade-off this November. Per The Conversation, a proposed constitutional amendment would expand homestead tax exemptions—the current fifty-thousand-dollar break would jump to two hundred fifty thousand dollars by twenty twenty-eight for existing homeowners. That means lower property taxes for many, but the state estimates an annual revenue loss of eleven point eight billion dollars. With no state income tax, local governments would need to fill the gap through higher taxes on landlords and businesses, increased fees, or service cuts. The amendment protects school funding, but essential services like police, fire, and emergency medical care could still suffer, particularly in smaller counties with limited ability to find alternate revenue.
