Making a Retro(ish) Game Console From Scratch
tech
According to Hackaday, a developer named Throaty Mumbo is building Game Console V2, a retro game console that rejects modern shortcuts in favor of authentic eighties-style engineering. Rather than SD cards and USB ports, it uses proper ROM cartridges on a parallel bus and outputs via composite AV — just RCA jacks, no VGA. An RP2350 microcontroller generates the NTSC video signal through a six-bit resistor network for RGB332 color output, with a dedicated audio processor handling sound. The creator plans to push further with version three, replacing the microcontroller with an actual eight- or sixteen-bit CPU.
