Scientists went looking for giant trees in Taiwan and found a lost world

Researchers exploring Taiwan's steep, remote mountains have discovered an extraordinary forest containing hundreds of giant Taiwania firs. Using LiDAR mapping and citizen-science detective work over several years, they identified East Asia's tallest known tree, at eighty-four point one meters, surrounded by dense clusters where dozens of enormous specimens grow together. The ancient forests, ScienceDaily reports, rank among the world's most carbon-rich ecosystems.
