Strengthening 3D Prints with a Carbon-Fiber Epidermis

Hackaday reports on a maker who solved a persistent problem with 3D-printed parts: traditional carbon-fiber reinforced filaments are expensive and often unreliable. The solution is elegantly simple. By printing parts in layers and epoxying carbon-fiber cloth into the gap between a core and outer shell, the maker achieved more than triple the yield strength compared to standard prints. The key is that woven cloth spreads mechanical load across a solid matrix, while single fibers just bend and fail. One important note: carbon fiber carries asbestos-like health risks, so proper handling is essential.
