Cell Broadcast: The Modern Emergency Alert System

Cell Broadcast is an emergency alert system that sends messages to millions of phones at once through cellular networks. According to Hackaday, the technology has been part of mobile standards since the nineteen-nineties—first demonstrated in Paris in nineteen ninety-seven—but has only recently seen widespread deployment. Per Hackaday, these alerts are far more efficient than sending individual text messages; authorities can target specific areas and send messages of up to thirteen hundred characters in just seconds. Australia recently tested its own Cell Broadcast system, called AusAlert, on July twenty-seventh, with ninety-four percent of targeted cell towers successfully broadcasting the message. The advantage is significant: one simultaneous broadcast reaches millions without overwhelming the network the way individual SMS messages would.
