Calculus-Free PID (Almost) in a Spreadsheet

PID controllers regulate temperature, motor speed, power supplies, and systems all around you. They're typically explained with enough calculus to make them seem far more complex than they actually are. According to Hackaday, a more intuitive approach exists: a Google Sheet that simulates a PID controller in action. You adjust the controller gains, introduce disturbances, and watch in real time as the Proportional term responds to how far you are from your target, the Integral term accounts for errors building up over time, and the Derivative term reacts to how fast things are changing. It's an interactive way to build intuition for one of engineering's most useful algorithms without needing calculus, without compiling code, and without accidentally turning a heater into a toaster.
